Some friends of ours gave us a few toys their four-year-old child had outgrown and we made them available to our 14-month-old boy. One toy was a set of Fisher-Price construction blocks which came in 3 shapes and fit together. At first the boy largely ignored them. Then he started tossing them about the room. However, after having the blocks for a couple months, he then started to putting them together end to end. He is now getting to where he fits 4 or 5 blocks together. He then takes them apart and sorts them out on the floor or other flat place. He then starts to put them back together again. Some times, he puts all one color or one shape together. It's rather amazing to watch. He seems to be gaining manual dexterity and reasoning at the same time. The blocks are such a simple toy, but he seems to find them endlessly fascinating. When he's tired or grumpy I can just give him a collection blocks and that gets his attention full time. The problem, as I see it, is that we had too few blocks.
This Christmas we gave him a Fisher-Price Little People Load 'n Go Wagon. It's a plastic wagon with a yellow tow bar on the front and a working platform on the rear. Inside the wagon is a fair-sized collection of construction blocks, the same kind that he already has. We load all the blocks in the wagon (a convenient place to store them) and he takes whatever he needs for his play construction. He's too young to use the wagon, as yet, but I'm certain he'll enjoy it when he's older. Right now he's totally absorbed by fitting the blocks together and taking them apart. He also enjoys loading and unloading the wagon.
In any case, it's a nice toy set and I'm inclined to think it's going to be fun as well as very educational. It's built out of bright-colored sturdy plastic and seems strong and durable (only time will tell). I'm surer it will last the time it's intended for (1 to 4 years) and then we'll give it away to someone else with a growing child.
